Historical milan

Of Celtic origin, Milan-Mediolanum (median place) was conquered by the Romans in 223 b.C., and obtained Latin citizenship in 89 b.C.

With the fall of the Empire,it was occupied by the Ostrogoths then by the Byzantines, Longobards and finally by the Franks.

In the meantime, the city’s autonomy was gradually taking shape; this led to the formation of the Commune, arousing the sanguinary reaction of the Empire and relative destruction by Barbarossa in 1158.

This phase of communal freedom was succeeded by the long period of the Seigniories, started by Azzone Visconti in 1330, which brought to the city centuries of cultural prestige, up to the arrival of Spanish rule in 1535.

During the war of succession to the throne of Spain, Milan passed under Austrian rule, then was taken over for twenty years by the French.

In 1814, Milan again became Austrian and remained so until the famous «five days» revolt, when the foreign yoke was shaken and adhesion to the new «Reign of Italy» matured. This was succeeded by a period of great commercial, industrial and banking development, which makes Milan still today one of the most prosperous cities in Europe.
